Frequently Asked Questions

We know some of you might be a tad curious about certain things going on the in the club. No worries, we’ll try to clear your doubts/questions as best as we can. Keep the questions coming!

………………..

1. Why such a confusing club name?

Yeah we know its confusing that there are awesome bands in a GUITAR club. Well, although we have bands in our club, the primary instrument is still the guitar be it in the form of classical, electric, acoustic, or bass guitars. And if you’ve read our introduction in the home page then you’ll probably have a rough idea where we got that uncool name.

2. What kind of bands do we have?

Kassim would reply: Heavy metal band from hell. Ok serious. We don’t have a specific genre because our awesome bands are versatile, flexible, whatever. We play what people want to hear and/or what we are paid to play. So for example, if the President invites us to play for an event, we won’t play Metallica or Britney Spears, we will probably be playing Rasa Sayang or something like that.

Recently we did a gig at Holland Village, and the organisers paid us to play multiracial popular songs. We played CIMO songs. So there you have it, we play according to the organizers requests.

3. Why don’t you have keyboards?

Because our primary instrument is the GUITAR, we do not want to add a keyboard in the expense of the 2nd guitar. Plus, it would take a longer time to do set up and sound check with the keyboards. A 5-piece band is tight enough.

4. Do we get CCA points through the performances/gigs/shows?

Whatever you call it. Of course you do! Since we have quite regular gigs you’ll get sufficient CCA points.

5. Can students from Halls join the club?

As much as we love these talented musicians, it is advisable not to because you’ll really need to prioritise and manage your time well. We can’t afford to have members who are M.I.A most of the time and most importantly disappear on the day of the gig itself. (happened before)

6. I don’t have my own guitar, can I still sign up for lessons?

Yes!! Of course you can still sign up to learn the guitar with us. The club has some spare classical/acoustic guitars for students who don’t have their own guitar. However, we do encourage students who are serious about learning the guitar to buy one. When you have your own guitar, it means that you can also practice at home!

7. Why do I have to attend an audition before taking guitar lessons?

The audition is intended to channel you to a class level that is appropriate for you and to check whether you might have tempo problems. It is also an opportunity for you to ask our instructors any questions that you might have.

8. Where and when will the guitar lessons be held?

We are still in the midst of planning the days for the classes. The confirmed day(s) for the classes should be set by the time you come down for the auditions. The classes are usually held either in the CAC club room (opp NUSSU) @YIH or it may also be held outside the clubroom if the room is unavailable for the day.

9. What do I have to do in order to register for guitar lessons?

Email us! Full information is in the Guitar Lessons page.

10. How does band allocation work? What’s the commitment like?

Practicality, really — we sort members according to what days of the week they’re free to jam as well as how many bands are needed for the upcoming gigs. So for one semester there might be a Wednesday band, Thursday band and  Saturday band with weekly jamming sessions, or during lulls we might just have a relatively small group that decides jam dates on a week-to-week basis. Just like the genre of music we end up playing, it really depends!

Commitment is gig-based; if you’ve agreed to a gig, you’d be showing up for its jamming sessions (usually once a week, occasionally two nearing the show).

Are there any singing lessons available?

  2. Garrett says:

I’m interested in joining as a vocalist, although I do play a little guitar. Are you open to individuals who are not uni students (although some say still look like one)? Thanks!

      Hi Garrett,

Sorry for the late reply. I apologize but we are obliged to only accept performers who are current students of NUS. Thanks for your interest!

    Hi.

I am moving into year 3 next semester. I have been learning guitar from a teacher outside NUS for about 2 years and play mainly as a rhythm guitarist in my previous band. May I know if I will be able to join the club at year 3?

    Thanks!

Hello~It is said that students from hall is not suggested to join this club, does this means that the club will take much of our time? Because I think once a week is ok for any club so I got quite confused with this…
